Train the trainer project in Asia

Dr. Elaine Ong, the principal of Box Hill Veterinary Hospital and vet nurses Ms. Ann Letch and Ms. Robyn Ireland started the very first Train the Trainer programme in 2009.

Dr. Elaine stated:

“After all the years of volunteering overseas, I see that there is no sustainability to a desexing programme and no solution to the stray animal problem if vets go over to developing countries and perform desexing surgeries themselves without teaching the local Vets and educating the community”.

The Train the Trainers project involves teaching vets and vet nurses to perform desexing surgery on cats, dogs and rabbits humanely, and to the highest standards, to ensure animal welfare standards are met. Gentle animal handling, modern anesthesia and pain relief methods are taught.

Since its inception in 2009, the programme has been succefully established in 11 cities in China: Beijing, Shenzhen Shanghai Dalian, Nanning, Liu Zhou, Zhongshan, Xian, Changsha, Guangzhou and Qinghai Tibet border. This intensive, hands on and world -unique programme has trained over 1000 vets and vet nurses and the list continues to grow.

To date we have 20 Certified Vets from different parts of China who have been selected to become our trainers. They organize more training in another 2 provinces when we are not there. They promote desexing of pets, perform over 500-100 desexings of stray animals in their own clinics at a discounted prices.
